MARGAO: Ahead of the Cortalim Zilla Panchayat (ZP) byelections, the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) welcomed Valent Barbosa along with his supporters into the party.

This move comes on the heels of the Congress recently welcoming Leon Raikar into the party. While Raikar is likely to be Congress’ candidate for the Davorlim ZP bypoll, Barbosa is likely to be the party’s candidate for the Cortalim ZP bypoll. They are likely to go up against the candidates backed by the former ZPs of Davorlim and Cortalim, BJP MLA Ulhas Tuenkar and Independent MLA Anton Vaz respectively.
Barbosa was welcomed into the party by South Goa Congress President Savio D’Silva at its South Goa headquarters, in the presence of various party dignitaries.
Savio stated that a young dynamic mechanical engineer from Cortalim could be a strong face for the ST community.
Olencio stated that Cortalim Block Congress committee welcomes Barbosa into the party and with his entry the youth in the constituency will have a right direction as Valent has professional education and has the will to work towards the betterment of the community and constituency as a whole.
In Cortalim, the present MLA has supported the BJP State government.
