“HAPPY NEW YEAR” — perhaps the most oft-repeated wish being uttered/written all around the society and which would continue till at least a fortnight!
Without disrespecting the sentiments attached with this greeting, it can also be safely asked would just mere utterance of it ensure happiness from the very first dawn of the fresh New Year!
Aren’t maximum forms of unhappiness which plague our lives entirely our own making! Sometimes victimising our own selves and sometimes rendering injustice to others!
Do we try to rectify ourselves? If the answer is “No”, then there also lies no reason to remain optimist of the Newest New Year in our lives.
But if the answer is “Yes”, only then there exists any ray of optimism for at least taking the positive steps to ensure improvement of ourselves and thereby the larger society.
Not only should we try to have a good care of the person in ourselves and remain true to our respective professions delivering our honest best; but also provide justice to our conscience — if our wish of a Happy New Year is indeed serious enough.
“Injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere”. If X is rendered injustice, protest should be registered not only in terms of morality; but even for selfish reasons also! Because if X gets tortured and no protest gets registered, then next day Y would be persecuted and still if it remains unprotested, then that fang of torture is sure to strike myself also in near future!
Today almost the whole country has erupted in anger following the insecurity posed by NRC-CAA! But why didn’t rest of India protest in mass when a particular state got divided overnight in absolute unilateral basis with all special protection according to the provision of Constitution removed! Why didn’t we care to even appreciate the pain of such insulted hearts! Instead the majority went gaga in the name of “national interest”! Were the people of the geographically-physically-psychologically affected state not part of the nation! Were their interest not our interest also! Can the interest of a nation be served by overlooking the interest of section of people of that very nation!
Just because “I am safe” or “not affected” does not mean that I would remain indifferent to the tragedy of hundreds who passed away prematurely in bank queues while trying to deposit or withdraw their own money or vulnerability of the millions of wage-earners who lost their jobs on the wake of demonetisation! Can a mere piece of document be allowed higher place in society by overriding the highest truth of humanity! If “No”, then how can we afford to remain indifferent to innumerable persons already languishing in Assam jails just because they could not produce certain documents and lakhs of others are set to move in detention centres!
Real happiness can be achieved in the society only when we will try to feel a bit of sympathy and empathy in our souls for our fellow human beings. This will obviously lead to protest against injustice torture which will also put to end of such ills thereby leading to a Happy society.
