MARGAO: Taking serious note of the pollution caused due to the burning of waste, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has warned their workers of strict action if found indulging in these short-cuts to dispose of garbage. However, Herald has learnt that these workers are forced to burn waste in the early hours of the morning as they are short of basic equipment like buckets and brooms.
The MMC’s sanitation committee has now decided to provide all the required equipment to their staff.
“Strict action will be taken against the workers and also on the supervisors if such types of activities are seen again. They will be responsible for any untoward incidents,” said Councillor Camilo Barretto, Chairman of the sanitation committee. Sweepers engaged in cleaning the footpaths and streets, besides gardens were setting the garbage on fire instead of collecting it to be picked up by the garbage collection trucks. Even plastic was seen burnt down by the municipal workers.
Barretto also said that the supervisors will be made party if any notice is served against the civic body pertaining to the pollution due to the burning of waste.
However, the councillor admitted that the workers were facing a tough time due to lack of equipment, and said they will be provided with everything they need.
