PANJIM: No homework for students of Class I and II and prescribed weight limit of school bags not exceeding 1.5kg per student are part of fresh directives issued by Directorate of Education (DoE) to all government and aided schools. The directions have been issued following guidelines by the Madras High Court in 2018.
“For Class I and II, teachers should not prescribe any homework. However, they give class work for evaluation,” Education Director Vandana Rao said in a circular issued to head of schools.

Schools have been directed not to prescribe any other subjects, except language and mathematics for Classes I and II, and language, EVS and mathematics for students of Classes III to V as prescribed by the State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT) by adopting National council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) curriculum.
“No other additional textbooks are to be prescribed without the permission of SCERT or DoE,” Rao said. Students should not be asked to bring additional books, extra materials and the weight of a school bag should not exceed the prescribed limit, she added.
The weight of school bags for students of Classes I and II should not exceed 1.5 kg, while the school bag of students of Class III to V should weigh between 2 kg and 3 kg.
The ADEIs and Zonal Officers have been directed to make a surprise visit, periodic checks and send quarterly report to the department.
