PORVORIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday said that the government was supporting the Goa State Horticulture Corporation that sells vegetables at subsidised rates, to keep a check on rising prices of vegetables in the markets.
Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao had mentioned the rise in vegetable prices and Sawant replied that the government is giving Rs 20 crore to the Goa State Horticulture Corporation to help stabilise the rates in the markets.
Alemao said that prices of tomatoes, potatoes, and onions were beyond the reach of Goans, who were already under financial burden due to rising unemployment and the collapse of mining activity and the tourism sector. “The prices are soaring due to a shortage of supply from neighbouring States due to disruption of traffic on account of landslides in ghat sections,” he said. He urged the government to take immediate steps to bring prices to affordable limits.
Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa said that there was fear and anxiety in the minds of Goenkars as non-Goans now outnumber locals in Goan markets where vegetables/fish/essential commodities are sold. “Non-Goans have captured the markets and the Goans fear that they might be displaced from their traditional occupations that earn them their livelihood,” he said, asking what measures the government intends to take in this regard.
