Helmets have now become mandatory for two-wheeler riders. The police have stepped up the drive against helmetless riders.
To avoid having to pay a penalty the two-wheeler riders may resort to even buying cheap helmets sold by the road-side. These helmets do not have the ISI marking and do not protect the rider in case of an accident.
There needs to be a total curb on the sale of such sub-standard helmets by road-side vendors. It is observed that to hoodwink the law enforcers, these vendors display just a couple of these substandard helmets by the road-side, as seen in the photograph, and the remaining stock is hidden in a vehicle parked nearby.
The concerned authorities need to confiscate all the helmets from these road-side vendors while at the same time penalizing them.
