BICHOLIM: A special meeting called on Monday by the Bicholim Deputy Collector regarding transportation of mining ore through Mayem village and the farmers demand remained inconclusive with both the parties standing firm over their demand.
It may be recalled that Mayem farmers had strongly opposed the move of the mining company to transport mining ore through the village and had demanded compensation for the damaged farms. They had also threatened that they would stop the mining transportation until their demands are met.
On Monday, a special meeting of the mining company officials and the farmers was held in the Bicholim deputy collector’s office to resolve the issue.
The mining company officials claimed that the Mayem road is demarcated as district road and that they have all the rights to do the ore transportation and the villagers cannot block the road.
The farmers stood firm on their stand and showed a circular issue by the Central government that clearly states that any road that goes through the village should not be used for mining ore transportation.
“Today’s meeting remained inconclusive and the authorities have again called for another meeting on Tuesday. We are firm on our stand and we have also submitted the circular from the Centre,” a farmer, Sakharam Pednekar said.
