Coastal police arrest Karnataka fishermen in State’s territorial waters

PANJIM: The Goa Coastal Police along with the Fisheries Department conducted a raid off the Talpona Coast, Canacona where they caught fishermen from Karnataka illegally fishing in the State’s territorial waters.

Nets and materials worth Rs 5 lakh was seized from the 20-odd trawlers

Local fishermen from Canacona also helped the team that conducted the raid and had also intimated them about the illegal activity after having first tried to catch them themselves.  

However, the fishermen from Karnataka had resisted their attempts and threw metal balls at them.

Talpona Coastal Police intervened and rescued the local fishermen who were involved in the change and nabbed the culprits.

While the Fisheries Department passes on complaints to the Coastal Police, local fishermen said such illegal activity occurs regularly and that the fishermen from outside Goa tear their nets as well.
