NAVELIM: Margao Sports Club blanked St Rock Youth Club Calata Majorda 3-0 to lift the Jose Bento Furtado Memorial trophy, organised by Navelim Villagers Union, played at Rosary ground, Navelim, on Wednesday.
Edgar Noronha opened the account for Margao in the 2nd minute. Two minutes later, Majorda’s Creson long ranger failed to enter Margao net. In the second half, Margao went all guns blazing and fired two more goals through Edgar Noronha and Valito Miranda in the 48th and 60th minutes respectively to make it 3-0 for Margao.
The winners collected Rs 40,000 and the runners-up had to be content with Rs 30,000.
Minister for Sports and Tourism Manohar Azgaonkar was the chief guest and gave away the prizes to winners and runners-up in the presence of Fr Americo Rodrigues, assistant parish priest of our Lady of Rosary Church, Navelim, Avertano Furtado, former Minister for Fisheries, Shubert Furtado, ex-GFA South Vice-president of GFA, Edwin Cipru Cardozo ,Z P Member, Prakash Dessai, GFA Executive member, Wilma Silva, Sarpanch of V.P.Navelim and other dignitaries and club officials.
Following players bagged the individual awards: Best striker: Edgar Noronha of Margao SC; Best goalkeeper: Swizel Pereira of Margao SC; Best defender: Creson of St Rock YC Calata Majorda; Best midfielder: Cliff Barretto of Margao SC; Promising player: Sheldon Gomes of Navelim Villagers Union.
