MARGAO: Navelim Villagers Union outwitted United Boys of Dando, Colva 8-7 via tie-breaker to cruise into the quarter-finals of All-Goa Cana Benaulim Panchayat Cup inter-village football tournament organized by Dando Boys Club of Benaulim, at St John de Baptist ground, Benaulim on Wednesday.
The teams were tied 2-2 at normal period.
Navelim Villagers started the game on an aggressive mode and kept their opponents on the defensive. They broke the deadlock in the 25th minute when striker Allister Gomes slotted past the rival goalkeeper into the net.
With an early success, Navelim Villagers intensified their attacks and fired couple of pot shots against the rival citadel but either it went wide or straight into the safe hands of rival goalkeeper.
Post resumption, United Boys of Dando put up an improved display with their forwards showing urgency and raided the rival goal. Persistent forays paid off the dividends when Baptist Fernandes bulge the net from a close range.
The equalizer boosted the morale of Colva lads as they mounted tremendous pressure on the rival goal and in the 35th minute Roamario Fernandes punished the rival goalkeeper with clinical finish.
With time running out, Navelim Villagers went all out and striker Alivto Colaco fetched them the equalizer.
In the penalty shoot out, Chandrakant Naik, Neville Pereira, Allwyn Fernandes, Sanford Cardozo, Bitu Singh and Eldrich Coelho converted for Navelim Villagers while Jovisco Fernandes, David Costa, Dulio Andrade, Collin Fernandes and Romario Fernandes netted for United Boys of Dando.
