NGO alleges horrible conditions at Sada jail

PANJIM: Against the backdrop of a murder and attempt to suicide by two women inmates in the Sada sub-jail, NGO Savera president Tara Kerkar on Friday alleged that conditions inside the jail are horrible with gangs flourishing and government paying no heed to the affairs.

“We had visited the jail last month and noticed the situation there. The living conditions and treatment meted out to the inmates are horrible. We had submitted our report to the Chief Minister and Inspector General of Prisons,” Kerkar said on Friday.
She said gangs were flourishing and even jail guards feel insecure. “There is acute scarcity of staff at this sub jail. Moreover, the jail guards feel unsafe to work there due to the indiscipline and violence inside,” Kerkar said.
She said the jail authorities should isolate the violent inmates. “There is no monitoring of movements of the inmates. The recommendation to install CCTV cameras in the jail has gone unheard,” she said.
Earlier this week, Sanjay Chauvan, who was arrested in a theft case was fatally assaulted by a fellow inmate. Similarly, two women under trials had tried to commit suicide in the jail.
