Shiroda local falls into drainage, dies
PONDA: A 47-year-old resident of Vaje-Shiroda died after he accidentally fell in the drainage at Bazar-Shiroda on Tuesday night. According to Ponda Police, the deceased was among several other villagers who had participated in Ganesh immersion at Shivnathi-Shiroda on Tuesday night. Police said the deceased had consumed alcohol and suspect the incident could have occurred while returning home. The body was noticed on Wednesday morning. Police further informed that the post-mortem report states that the death has occurred due to neck injury. PSI G Mallik is investigating the case.
Bethora local held for assault
PONDA: Ponda Police arrested a 42-year-old man on charges of assaulting his cousin with a chopper at Ashe Wada, Bethora-Ponda, late Tuesday night. According to Ponda Police, accused, Gokuldas Gaude, allegedly assaulted Nilkant Gaude (32) over some issue. Gokuldas was arrested and later released on bail. Nilkant is out of danger.
Cable worth Rs 1.80 lakh stolen
BICHOLIM: Copper cable worth Rs 1.80 lakh was stolen from a tower construction site at Bordem-Bicholim. According to Bicholim Police, a telecom company officer, Abhoy Patil, complained that some persons stole 300 metres copper cable worth Rs 1.80 lakh from an open site of tower construction at Bordem-Bicholim. Head Constable A D Gawas is investigating the case.
Bengal native found dead at Baga
CALANGUTE: A native of West Bengal, but residing at Calangute, was found dead in a resort at Baga on Tuesday. According to Calangute Police, the body of Anup Das was sent to GMC Hospital in Bambolim for post-mortem and PSI Nitin Halankar is investigating the case.
Mapusa youth hangs to death
PORVORIM: A 26-year-old man from Ganganagar-Khorlim, Mapusa, was found dead hanging at his residence on Tuesday. According to Mapusa Police, the body of Manohar Gaude was sent to GMC Bambolim for post-mortem and PSI C R Gawas is investigating the case.
Motorcyclist dies at Bastora mishap
PORVORIM: A motorcycle rider from Pomburpa died after he was knocked down by a car at Bastora on Tuesday. According to Mapusa Police, the car (GA-03-H-3847) was proceeding from Mapusa to Ucassaim when it dashed oncoming motorcycle (GA-03-L-8131). Motorcycle rider, Mahesh Volvaikar, who was seriously injured, succumbed to injuries. PSI C R Gawas is investigating the case.
Boy kidnapped at Pernem
PERNEM: An 11-year-old boy was reported kidnapped in Pernem on Tuesday evening. According to Pernem Police, the victim’s father complained that a man and a woman on a scooter (GA-06-D-3555) kidnapped his minor son. Pernem Police registered the case under Section 363 r/w 34 IPC and Section 8 (2) of Goa Children Act 2003.
Britona youth found hanging
PORVORIM: A 24-year-old youth from Haliwada-Penha de France, Britona, was found hanging near a general store at Britona on Tuesday. According to Porvorim Police, Siddesh Shet hanged himself with the help of a nylon rope. PSI Nitin Halankar is investigating the case.
Liquor worth Rs 14,000 stolen
CURCHOREM: Liquor worth Rs 14,000 was stolen from a shop at Deulamol-Molkornem, Quepem. According to Quepem Police, Antonio D’Costa of Deulamol complained that some persons entered his shop through the roof and stole liquor (beer and soda bottles) worth Rs 14,000. Cash, cell phones stolen
CANACONA: Cash and mobile phones worth Rs 80,000 were stolen from a house at Mastimol-Canacona. According to Canacona Police, Sugan Vaishnavi of Mastimol-Canacona complained that some persons entered her house by breaking the latch of the main door and decamped with cash of Rs 75,000 and mobile phones, all worth Rs 80,000. ASI Arjun Gaonkar is investigating the case.
Iranian drowns at Sinquerim
CALANGUTE: A 53-year-old Iranian died, while a 23-year-old youth from Kerala was rescued in separate incidents at Sinquerim and Baga beaches. According to reports, a group entered a non-swim zone at Sinquerim beach despite request by the lifeguard to stay close to the shoreline. After a while, Mohammad Zadhei suddenly fell down in the knee deep water. The lifeguards rushed to his aid and brought Zadhei ashore. Family members said Zadhei had a cardiac problem and he was rushed to the Candolim PHC, where he was declared dead on arrival. In another incident at Baga beach, Mahesh M who was in a no-swim zone against lifeguard advice and got caught in a rip current. Lifeguards rushed to the spot and brought him safely to the shore. The victim was shifted to Candolim PHC and was kept under observation.
Pick-up skids, driver unhurt
CANACONA: A pick-up driver escaped unhurt, after a vehicle loaded with tiles skidded off the road along the NH17 at Karmalghat-Canacona, on Wednesday. According to reports, the pick-up (GA-02-T-6730) loaded with ceramic tiles skidded off the road when the driver applied brakes to avert hitting a cattle, besides colliding with an oncoming KSTC bus. The pick-up skidded in the roadside trench at the foot of Karmalghat. The driver escaped unhurt.
Teachers feted at Colva
PANJIM: The Zone Chairman Nagesh Naik (Zone XVIII) along with members and guests from the zone, comprising of Lions Club of Nuvem-Verna, Colva, Navelim and Mormugao felicitated six teachers at a function held at Lions Club House, Colva.
Nagesh welcomed the chief guest Remedios Rebello, teachers, sisters and the guests.
The felicitated teachers are Coleta Figueiredo, Mary Piety Rodrigues, Ancy George, Ujwala N Shahapurkar, Elinda Flor D’Souza e Da Costa and Joaquim Da Costa.

PANJIM: Goa Doordarshan will telecast phone-in live interview of Fr Nevel Gracias (Vel’lekar) on September 20 from 7.15pm to 8 pm. Fr Nevel Gracias, a member of Goa Diocesan, has written around 21 tiatr and around 17 of his tiatr were based on religious subjects. He has composed and sung around 300 songs in his tiatr. Medical camp held at Bogmalo
PANJIM: Manipal Hospital Goa in association with ‘Save the Children-Goa Chapter, under the Dr Anthony Lobo (founder) and Dr Carla Souza (physiotherapist), conducted a free medical camp for the inmates of their home for the aged and mentally challenged at Bogmalo. The Manipal Hospital team was led by Dr Madhuri Debsikdar, occupational health therapist. Patients’ height, weight, blood pressure, BMI computed and recorded.
Bus for Soccoro students flagged off
PORVORIM: Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte flagged off the KTC school bus service from Bhutki Waddo to Porvorim via Arrarim, in the presence of Socorro Sarpanch Vaishali Satardekar, Deputy Sarpanch Anil Pednekar and Vijay Ghate (OSD Traffic KTC).
Khaunte said most of the students from Socorro go to schools in Porvorim, but due to lack of transport facilities, they face a lot of hardships. “There was a demand from the locals to introduce bus for the students to go to Porvorim from Bhutki Waddo-Socorro via Arrarim and 20 Point Programme Colony. Considering this need, the KTC has introduced the bus service for the students from this area,” said Khaunte. Satardekar welcomed the gathering, while Asnodkar proposed the vote of thanks.
Notice to mariners
PANJIM: The National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula, will be conducting a scientific survey using an in-house developed autonomous underwater vehicle Maya in the Zuari river off Cortalim on September 20 between 8 am to 2 pm. The survey will be along the axis of the river for a length of approximately 10km and includes both upstream and downstream towards Shiroda. All owners, masters of barges, passengers launches, ferry boats, tindels of fishing trawlers and operators of crafts plying in river Zuari at the said locality are cautioned.

PANJIM: Goa Catholic Charismatic Renewal Trust is organizing a retreat for nurses in English, at Palloti Home Chicalim. The retreat will commence on September 21 at 4 pm and end on September 23 at 1 pm. It will be conducted by the national service team.
Goa Tourism stall wins award
PANJIM: The Department of Tourism participated at the 19th International Trade Fair for Travel and Tourism in Moscow, Russia at the IEC ‘Crocus Expo’ which began on September 17 and runs up to September 20. The Goa contingent was let by Deputy Speaker Anant Shet. The Goa Tourism stall was presented an award which was received by Shet. Speaking on the occasion Shet remarked, “Russia is a very important market for Goa and in view of the upcoming foreign tourist season, it was very important to have our presence at this travel fair. We are expecting to increase tourist arrivals from Russia by at least 10-15 per cent this year.”
CA-PWD workshop
PANJIM: The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in collaboration with Public Works Department organized a two-day workshop on non-revenue water reduction. Non-revenue water consists of water that is ‘lost’ before reaching the consumer, which includes loss through leaks or through theft or inaccuracies in metering. The workshop was attended by Sudin Dahavalikar, PWD Minister, the Principal Secretary PWD, Deputy representative Ichiguchi from JICA and invited stakeholders and officials from Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bangalore Kerala, Hyderabad, Pune, Tamil Nadu and Manipur.
There were presentations on studies conducted, reforms needed and long-term water reduction plan.
An open forum session was also organized wherein participants expressed their opinions and share their ideas. There were also sessions on the significance of Public-Private partnerships in the water sector.
