PANJIM: After BJP and NCP, it was turn of Congress MLAs on Wednesday to move a private members’ resolution demanding the installation of a statue of Dr Jack de Sequeira in the State Assembly Complex.
Legislature Secretary Nilkant Subhedar confirmed that the Congress MLAs have moved the resolution for the installation of Dr Jack de Sequeira’s statue. “The resolution is signed by all the 16 MLAs,” he said.
Speaking to Herald, Leader of the Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar said the party’s legislative wing had resolved to move the resolution and accordingly it has been filed. “Those who are in favour of our demand should support our resolution on the floor of the House,” he said.
“We are not playing politics. We are respecting people’s sentiments. Dr Jack de Sequeira was the hero of the Opinion Poll, who fought against Goa’s merger with Maharashtra. We have to respect his fight and sacrifice,” Kavlekar said.
Refusing to speak further Kavlekar said, “Let us talk on the Floor of the House”.
Goa Forward Party (GFP), a coalition partners in the BJP-led government, was the first to demand the installation of Dr Sequeira’s statue in the Assembly complex. However, with all three party MLAs being ministers, they cannot move a private members’ resolution.
Deputy Speaker and BJP MLA Michael Lobo was the first to move a private members’ resolution pressing for Sequeira’s statue. He was followed by NPC MLA Churchill Almeao who moved a similar resolution.
