PORVORIM: After delaying the implementation by over a year, the State government will implement the new Motor Vehicle Amendment Act and the taxi meters from January 1, 2021. Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho said the government will not delay the implementation any further.

Since 2019, the Act has been kept in abeyance, later it was due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he said. Godinho also said that taxi meters will be implemented as per the High Court directions.
“High Court has directed State government to strictly implement taxi meters by October 2020 but could not be done due to COVID-19 pandemic,” he said. He stated that he has asked the Advocate General to inform the High Court that the meters will be implemented from January 1.
The new legislation came into force across the country from September 1, 2019 onwards. However, after some State governments raised concerns regarding some of the hiked fines, they were permitted to impose lower penalties for certain traffic violations.
Taking a cue, the Goa government also decided to reduce the penalties for some offences and the enforcement of the new MV (Amendment) Act was consequently postponed to January 2020 but was further delayed due to opposition from citizens.
