VASCO: Complying with the Supreme Court order, the Vasco Excise officials began issuing directions to liquor outlets across Mormugao and Vasco town that come within 500 meter of State and National highways, to shut down their operations from Saturday onwards.
According to Vasco Excise Inspector Mukund Gauns, after complying with the directions from superiors to submit the exact locations of liquor outlets in Mormugao taluka, the taluka level survey team physically measured all affected liquor outlets across taluka and indentified 494 liquor outlets out of total 663 licensed liquor outlets that were falling within 500 meters of all three national highways including NH17, NH17A, NH17B passing through Mormugao taluka.
“In the wake of Supreme Court’s recent order and following orders from superiors, we formed different teams of our staff on Saturday. All our teams visited areas affected by the SC order and found many of the liquor outlets open while many were closed. We have issued warnings to close down operations immediately to all those outlets which were seen operating and our teams will regularly keep a vigil on same for strict compliance of the SC order. For bar and restaurants we have asked the operators to serve only food and no liquor from Saturday itself,” Gauns said.
