KTC not averse to sign boards in Konkani: Deepak

Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTC) is not averse to have its sign boards and hoardings in Konkani language, if there is demand from the locals, Chairman Deepak Dhavalikar said today.
Dhavalikar said that if there is demand for Konkani boards then the Corporation can always discuss the issue in its Board of Directors meeting.“We are not against any language. We respect people’s sentiments,” he added.
The Corporation was moved after section of Konkani protagonists asserted that being government run body, KTCL should have its boards in Konkani besides English. The need for Konkani boards is inscribed in the Official Language Act.
Goa Konkani Academy (GKA), state-government funded body, had also requested Kadamba to execute their day-to-day business in Konkani.
Talking to Herald today GKA president N Shivdas welcomed KTCL’s move and demanded that government should think seriously over implementation of this language.
“Even though the Official Language Act came into force way back in 1987, the state is yet to implement it with full vigour. The government itself is not serious over the issue,” he said.
He alleged that government reluctance to executive the act is because most of its officials are non-Goans. “We don’t follow policies,” he said.
KTCL is a government of Goa road transport undertaking set up in 1980 by then chief minister Pratapsingh Rane. The corporation is heavily subsidized and is financially in loses.
