PANJIM: While sanctioning 43 garbage collection vehicles to municipal councils, the Department of Urban Development has allocated funds ranging from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1.10 crore to civic bodies under the 14th Finance Commission for Solid Waste Management.
Department of Municipal Administration (DMA) Director Elvis Gomes said that the under Solid Waste Management, municipal councils have been allocated grants, wherein larger councils are given Rs 1.10 crore while smaller councils have got between Rs 50 lakh and Rs 1 crore.
Gomes said the department has sanctioned 43 Ace Hopper Tipper vehicles to municipal councils based on the Swachh Bharat Mission Cell of the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA). “The decision was taken based on the experimental exercise carried out in Ponda Municipal Council by sanctioning seven such vehicles for waste collection which has resulted in improvement of waste collection, transportation and disposal,” he said.
Seven vehicles each have been sanctioned to Margao and Mormugao Municipal councils, five to Mapusa, three each to Curchorem-Cacora, Cuncolim, Quepem, Bicholim, Sankhali, two each to Sanguem, Valpoi and Canacona and one to Pernem Municipal council. Ponda has been provided an additional two vehicles.
“These vehicles can reach even remote corners of the towns and instead of collecting the waste in bins, citizens can directly place their waste in the vehicles, as a result, waste does not remain in the bins but directly gets transferred to the disposal site,” Gomes said.
Earlier, each municipal council had been provided with a sufficient number of waste collection bins.
