SANGUEM: The side barriers of the bridge at Uguem connecting Sanguem town and other areas is totally covered with overgrown bushes and trees on one side making it dangerous for the vehicle riders to note the barriers.
While the protection barriers on one side are broken and needs immediate repairs, the barriers on the other side are not all visible and there are chances of vehicle riders dashing their vehicles against the protection barriers and falling into the rivulet in the event of missed judgement and driving their vehicles by the side of the road.
The bridge at Uguem, which was built during Portuguese regime is also rendered weak and there is a need for its immediate reconstruction, claim the villagers.
While some repair work of the bridge was undertaken some years back, the situation has now turned to its earlier position and this has necessitated the work of reconstruction of the bridge.
Villagers informed that this is the only bridge, which forms the link for the villagers of Uguem, Bhati, Villian and Ponsamoll to proceed to Sanguem and other areas and in the event of its collapse, the villagers will be compelled to travel to Sanguem via Kalay covering a distance of another 15 kilometres as against the normal route of four kilometres via Uguem.
The villagers have appealed to the panchayat and the PWD authorities, asking them to immediately repair the broken side barriers of the bridge. They have also urged the authorities to carry out immediate cleaning of the overgrown bushes and trees, which has covered the side barriers of the bridge on the other side for the safety of the road users.
