Residents of Desterro had threatened to take to the streets after they noticed attempts to install a mobile tower in the area despite objections.
The agitated residents met Vaz on Thursday and placed their grievances before him. They informed the chief officer that the party had approached committee members of Murgao Avenue bldg with the offer of Rs 75,000 per month and another Rs 25,000 to the chairman of the committee. As the residents refused the offer, the party approached a neighbour who readily agreed and the issue kick started.
“Our battle is on for the last one-and-half-month with no results. When no one heard our plea we had to launch the protest in this manner. We believe that the chief officer will ensure that the permission for the mobile towers will be revoked,” said complainant Sandeep Mayekar, who is chairman of the Murgao Avenue resident’s society.
Vaz told Herald that he has issued a stop work order for the tower in question and another tower at Ravindra Bhawan in Baina. “I have to study the case as the permission was issued by former chief officer J B Bingui. However, as the issue of the residents is found to be genuine I have issued a stop work order and after going through the file I will take further action,” Vaz said.
