MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council on Thursday removed hoardings and advertising boards in and around the old market area.
A MMC team headed by market inspector Anil Shirodkar carried out the drive against hoardings following instructions from the Deputy Collector, Margao.
Shirodkar informed that the action against hoardings came following instructions received from the deputy collector to clear the advertising boards along the highway passing through Margao. “In the past, the civic body had cleared a number of hoardings along the roadsides. But, today’s action is based on latest instructions from the district authorities”, Shirodkar said.
Though the civic body has removed hoardings along the highway in the municipal jurisdiction in recent times, the fate of several hoardings hangs in balance as a writ petition in the matter is presently pending in the High Court.
Sources in the know informed that the civic body has neither renewed the hoarding license fees nor has it razed down the structures till date, with the hoardings and advertising boards standing tall along the road sides till date.
