Bookworm classroom library
PORVORIM: Bookworm Goa Association recently conducted a session ‘in monsoon … dive into reading’ for the students of St Thomas Primary School, Santerxett-Aldona.
The session was inaugurated by Aurora Couto, the owner of the Bookworm Goa Association, which consists of many educated parents and educationists mainly from Aldona.
The main objective of the Association is to create libraries and taking reading experiences to schools, where children learn to love and read books. They have set up a books corner in the school.
Lisa Alvares and Flavia Lobo were appointed as library teachers by the Bookworm team.
Gaondongrim teachers to be feted
CANACONA: Bharat Vikas Parishad, Canacona, will felicitate two retired teachers from Canacona and all teachers of a school at Tudal-Gaondongrim on the occasion of Guru Poornima on Monday.
Retired high school headmaster Vijay Kumar Prabhudessai and primary school teacher Sudha Komarpant will be felicitated, while all the teachers of Tudal High School, Gaondongrim will be honoured for the exceptional performance of their students at last academic year in Board examinations.
It may be recalled that giving a 100 per cent result, out of 37 students, six achieved Distinction and 15 got First Class.
Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar will be the chief guest, while the newly appointed Government Higher Secondary, Canacona, Principal Jose Francisco Gomes will be guest of honour.
Anthony to head Uguem club
SANGUEM: Anthony Colaco was elected as president of Uguem Rising Club (URC) for 2013-16 at the recent annual general body meeting. Other members elected are Luis Martins (secretary), Silvano Fernandes (treasurer) and Milton Dias (team manager).
The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Plesedo Fernandes in the presence of outgoing president Galdino Dias.
Speaking to Herald Colaco appealed to the Sports Authority of Goa under whose banner the club is registered to sanction financial aid to the club to organise sports activities in the village.
Yoga classes conducted
PANJIM: As a health awareness drive for newly-admitted students of Std XI, the Pranayama and Yoga classes were conducted in the Shree Damodar Higher Secondary School of Science. All together 200 students participated in these classes. Meeta Bandekar, Higher Secondary School teacher conducted these classes and said these exercises would keep their body healthy and flexible. Parinita Porobo and Physical Education Teacher Arun Faldessai assisted.
Salgaocar College panel elected
PANJIM: The election of the Student’s Council of V M Salgaocar College of Law, Miramar, Panjim was held on July 17 for the academic year 2013-14. Cannigia Carvalho has been elected as the General Secretary of the Council. Sheshan Rawool has been elected as the Cultural Secretary and Vishwas Fernandes has been elected as the Sports Secretary. Nagesh Colvalcar is the Chairman of the Student’s Council.
Schneider celebrates Luli Week
PANJIM: Schneider Electric Verna, a French-based MNC celebrated Luli Week with activities organized for its employees and society at which President of Verna Industries Association Prakash Shinde was the chief guest. President of Savera Tara Kerkar, President of Jaganath Kala Sangh Sunil Shet, Headmistress of St Joseph Convent High School Verna Sr Claret, Plant Head Rajkumar Thimmarayan and Human Resourses manager Sarvesh Parab were present.
Shinde urged all companies to carry out CSR drives to support the poor and needy. Kerkar, Shet and Sr Claret also spoke., while Parab read the activity report. Thimmarayan proposed the vote of thanks. The theme of the celebration was ‘Use Your Legs.’
Madhavi new Rotary Riviera prez
PANJIM: Madhavi Bandekar Shetye was installed as the 10th President of Rotary Club of Panaji Riviera at the installation ceremony held at Vivanta by Taj on July 20, by Chief Guest, Dr Indumati Gopinathan from Mumbai. The entire Board of Directors was also installed.
On the occasion outgoing president Siddharth Zantye and outgoing secretary Dr Mahesh Pai showcased the projects carried out during their year. The monthly Club Bulletin ~ The Rivulet ~ was also released in the presence of Assistant Governor Nitin Kenkre.
Madhavi’s new Board of Directors comprises of Siddharth Zantye, Secretary Meghana Sawardekar, Treasurer Pallavi Salgaoncar, President Elect Clare D’Souza, Vice President Vishnu Tarkar, Sergeant at Arms Clayton D’Souza, and the Directors and Chairmans of the Club ~ Dr Sunil Kenkre, Sanil Shirwaikar, Dr Mahesh Pai, Dr Shekhar Shirwaikar, Raja Melvani, Angad Singh, Prasad Pawar, Veronica Velho, Paresh Sawardekar, Abhijeet Shetye and Yogesh Kulkarni.
A new member Tanvi Doshi Sawant was also inducted. Panaji Riviera has already started their year by undertaking projects like free basic computer training programme, women empowerment project, lunch and provisions to Provedoria old age home, Chimbel, tree plantation drive, etc.
Taparia unveils torque wrenches
PANJIM: Taparia has launched torque wrenches in both the standard and ratcheted types. Torque wrench is a versatile tool, which also acts as an instrument for measurement of torque to be imparted on threaded fasteners. Designers of structures, automobile and other assemblies often specify torque value for various sizes of bolted joints to achieve optimum clamping force. Hence the need arise for an instrument which can impart correct torque value while tightening simultaneously.
Taparia also unveiled tools trolley with reinforced double wall frame with single piece casting enabling high strength and long life. High quality ball bearing slides enable smooth drawer opening. Rear locking system avoids opening of the drawers when the tools trolley is being moved. The castors are smooth, strong and chemical resistant and have a load capacity of up to 550 lbs. Trolleys are available in 5 drawers and 7 drawers.
Education with values underscored
MAYEM: Former Bicholim MLA Rajesh Patnekar has called upon teachers to impart education with moral values to students. He was addressing the students at a function organized by Shri Shantadurga HS, Bicholim, running under Vidhyavardhak Mandal, at the farewell function of two retiring teachers and one non-teaching staff.
On the occasion, Deputy Headmaster Ganesh Joshi, Sachhitanand Samant and an employee Utaam Gosavi were felicitated for rendering services in the field of education.
Vidhyvardhak Mandal President Vijay Walaulikar, Headmaster Suresh Ghatwal, members Arun Salkar, Digamabr Teli, Gurudas Zantye and Dinesh Mayekar were present on the occasion.
Kavi Sammelan at Bogda
VASCO: Ratna Diva Sports & Cultural Association, Vasco, in association with Fishery Survey of India, Mormugao, and Goa Ugtem Mallab, Panjim, will organise All Goa Bahu Bhashik Kavi Sammelan in Hindi, Konkani, Marathi and Urdu at Fishery Survey of India conference hall at Bogda-Mormugao on July 27 from 3 pm to 7.30 pm.

Bal Sangeet Sammelan held
MAYEM: Progress High School, Sanquelim recently organised ‘All Goa Bal Sangeet Sammelan’ at Dada Borkar Hall, Sanquelim, to mark its golden jubilee.
Dr Pradeep Padwal (vice chairman, managing committee), Dr Vidhyadatt Verenkar, Prasad Pangam (manager), Dilipkumar Sahasrabuddhe (PTA chairman, Devdatt Sanzgiri, Maria E D’Souza (Headmistress) and Vijaykumar Verenkar (assistant headmaster) inaugurated the Sammelan.
In all, 16 schools took part in the Sammelan. Each participant sang three songs (Bhaktigeet, Bhavgeet and Natyageet). Harmonium teacher from Bal Bhavan Mahesh Gawas and Tabla teacher Shailesh Shirodkar accompanied the participants.
The first three winners are Gayatri Patil (Krishna Raghunath Shet HS, Savoi Verem), Sampada Bhid (Shri Shantadurga HS, Bicholim) and Mekhla Salkar (Ideal HS, Pilgaon).
St Xavier’s NSS unit opened
PORVORIM: The inaugural function of National Service Scheme unit of St Xavier’s College, Mapusa, was recently organised in the college seminar hall.
The theme for the academic year 2013-2014 is ‘A Positive Attitude-A Positive YOU’. David D’Souza, executive manager at PEZ-India Ltd, was the chief guest for the function.
College Principal Fr Walter de Sa said: “By enrolling as NSS volunteers, you have shown your concern towards helping people. Spend more hours in social service for the betterment of the society.”
In his address to the audience, D’Souza relived his memories of his college days. “Never compare time with money. Time once lost will never come back. So when you are getting a chance to do something for the society, do your best,” he said.
Opposition Leader Pratapsing Rane felicitates former sarpanch Prakash Gaonkar at Thane-Sattari.
Importance of education stressed
VALPOI: Stressing the importance of education, Opposition Leader Pratapsing Rane said women should pursue education to gain self-esteem in this modern era.
He was speaking at the felicitation function of former Thane-Sattari sarpanch Prakash Gaonkar which was organised by like-minded people and well-wishers from Thane Panchayat area under the banner Gavrao Samittee at Multipurpose Hall, Thane.
Speaking further, Rane said science and technology has enriched the lifestyle of the people.
In his speech, Gaonkar thanked the felicitation committee for taking cognizance of his work for the people of Thane and said he has learned a lot in politics under the guidance of Rane.

Canacona Lions BoD installed
CANACONA: Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar has expressed the need for wider involvement of NGOs to implement various schemes in the State.
Tawadkar was speaking at the installation ceremony of new BoD of Canacona Lions led by 33rd President Babaji Sawant.
On the occasion, Lions Club of Canacona through Tawadkar felicitated meritorious students of Canacona with certificate and mementos. They are Jeevan Prabhu (first in SSC), Shruti Velip (second in SSC), Vandana Bakre (first in HSSC Arts), Mellissa Fernandes (first in Commerce), Pranav Tengse (first in Science), Narareth Vintcia (first in Vocational-I), Jovito Fernandes (first in Vocational-II), P Vishwpratap (first in BA) and Srinivas Prabhu (first in BCom).
Lions District 317B Vice District Governor MJF Agnelo Alcasoas installed the board of directors led by Babaji Sawant for 2013-14, with Bernard Fernandes secretary, Dr Vilas Pawaskar (treasurer), Gopinath Dessai (membership chairman) and Mario Fernandes (club PRO), besides 22 board of directors.
