PANJIM: The US-based Denver Sister Cities International has expressed its willingness to connect with Panjim in various areas after receiving a proposal from the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) Mayor.
If Panjim and Denver clinch a deal it would be a major achievement for Goa.
“Denver Sister Cities International is honoured and pleased to have learned from Purnima Voria, Founder and CEO of National US India Chamber of Commerce, of your interest in connecting with Denver as a Sister City. Denver has been a Sister City with Chennai since 1984, and we are eager to expand and catalyse our efforts in India with your strong support and interest,” said Beth Hendrix, Denver Sister Cities International, Executive Director, in a letter to CCP Mayor Surendra Furtado.
The letter appreciating draft outline plan or the sister cities proposal states, “We appreciated the draft outline for the proposed areas of cooperation for the Sister City relationship, and look forward to working with Voria and your team to identify and develop programming, along with a structural, operational and implementation plan for this proposed partnership. You have our keen interest in working with you to develop everlasting, mutually beneficial relations, respect and impact between our cities, states and countries and elsewhere through this proposed partnership.”
Twin towns or sister cities are a form of legal or social agreement between towns, cities, counties, oblasts, prefectures, provinces, regions, states, and even countries in geographically and politically distinct areas to promote cultural and commercial ties.
Speaking to Herald, CCP Mayor Surendra Furtado said, “We welcome Denver Sister Cities International to collaborate with the CCP. Also I am looking forward to many more city twinning from countries who have visited us already such as Portugal, Brazil, Canada and Norway. CCP has also promised to allot them space in the new CCP building once completed.”
“Once these consulate offices start here in Panjim, the staff will be able to help students as well as other professions in the required direction, instead of going to Mumbai every time,” he added.
