In a meeting convened at the Xavier Centre of Historical Research, Eric Pinto said unplanned development would create scarcity of water and power, while village roads would be under great strain.
“In its manifesto, the BJP had promised that no development would be allowed without developing the infrastructure. The mushrooming of buildings in Porvorim constituency has made a mockery of that promise,” Pinto said.
“The government has undertaken the construction of the third Mandovi Bridge without proper planning, due to which the residents have to bear the brunt of heavy traffic congestion near Sai Service during peak hours,” he added.
Srinivas Kamat said that due to high traffic density along the Panjim-Mapusa highway, it has become difficult to cross the road. “A representation should be made to government authorities to install traffic signals at Sai Service Junction and Alto-Porvorim near Ashwin Garage,” Kamat said.
Candelario Pinto said trees are being cut, especially in Socorro and Salvodor-do-Mundo areas, under the pretext of widening the roads. “This issue needs to be taken up with the Forest department on urgent basis, as cutting of trees indiscriminately will cause harm to the environment of the villages,” he said.
John Eric Gomes suggested that the PRF should form a committee to take up these issues with the government authorities and the panchayats concerned.
