MARGAO, MARCH 18
The Margao Municipal Council on early Wednesday morning cracked a whip against retail sale of vegetable and other food items in the wholesale fish market.
Around 10 handcarts selling fruits and vegetables, besides baskets of chillies and other items were confiscated during the operation. The municipal team also razed down a temporary structure put up near the KTC bus stand and also confiscated small boxes selling pan tobacco.
If municipal Chairperson Savio Coutinho is to be believed, the team also seized some tables used to conduct matka gambling.
The drive comes in the wake of complaints from the retail fish vendors that the wholesale fish market at Madel has been turned into a retail outlet for fish, fruits, vegetables and other items.
The team headed by Market Inspector Dulcina Saldanha made its presence felt at the wholesale fish market early this morning and went about confiscating goods sold illegally in the market.
Saldanha said the team also carried out the operation in the Old Market and Borda area of the city and disclosed plans to continue the drive.
Replying to a question, she said the seized goods will be returned to the owners after imposing a fine.
Chairperson Coutinho, however, told the civic officials to dismantle the illegal handcarts found operating in the market area.
