MARGAO: Aam Aadmi party on Wednesday raised concern over the depositors in the Madgaum Urban cooperative bank about possible loss of deposits that prompted a delegation from the party to visit the bank headquarters at Margao to get firsthand account of the present status.
Delegation led by Party chief Elvis Gomes met the managing Director Kishore Amonkar on Thursday and discussed various problems in order to understand th fate of depositors.
After the meeting Gomes informed that MD Amonkar has assured them that the interest of the depositors would be protected. But he said that the matter being in the hands of the Reserve bank of India which is regulator of all banks, it was difficult to place a time frame as to when the depositors would get their money.
“We got a fairly good understanding of the state of affairs. It is the RBI which is now dealing with the issue. We will be paying a visit to the RBI too to relate the woes of the depositors” said Gomes.
Meanwhile Gomes directed his ire at the Goa government which he said had shown no interest in salvaging the bank. He said that the bank is in the cooperative sector and the government had adequate powers to rescue the bank by infusing a small capital in the overall interest of thousands of depositors who were facing an uncertain future.
