MARGAO: In response to the growing number of cancer cases in Goa, three religious associations—the Ganjana Maharaj Trust, Shree Hari Mandi Devasthan, and Shree Durgamata Temple-Margao—have come together to raise awareness and educate the public about cancer. This initiative is part of their broader commitment to addressing pressing social issues within the community.

The associations have organized a series of educational programs, including a cancer awareness event scheduled for November 27 in collaboration with Ravindra Bhavan-Margao. The aim of the event is to inform the public about the different types of cancer, the importance of early detection, and the need for regular screenings and check-ups.
Girish Keni, one of the organizers, highlighted the alarming rise in cancer cases in Goa, stating, “Goa has become a hub of cancer. It’s crucial to raise public awareness and educate society on the symptoms, prevention, and treatment of cancer.” He stressed that Goa’s cancer rates are increasing at a much faster pace compared to other states in India.
Manohar Borkar, Vice-Chairperson of Ravindra Bhavan-Margao, echoed these concerns, calling for collective action to address this health crisis.
Meanwhile, Adesh Karwarkar emphasized that recent surveys, including data from the World Health Organization, show that Goa’s coastal belt has the highest number of cancer cases in the country.
Dr Shekar Salkar will discuss early detection methods, prevention strategies, and the latest advancements in cancer treatment. The associations hope these efforts will help curb the rising trend of cancer cases in the region.
