MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council has finally decided to create a multi-storey parking facility in the city out of the funds sanctioned by the government under the Golden Jubilee Signature grant.
The MMC approved a proposal to create the parking facility on the municipal land at the old fish market with a capacity to accommodate 128 cars. The ground plus three storey building will be built by the civic body with a provision for office and storeroom on the top floor.
Though the civic body is in receipt of Rs 3 crore under the signature project, the council on Monday has decided to approach the government for additional funds to set up the facility.
The civic body had earlier resolved to set up the multi-storey cum commercial complex at the old fish market, but the proposal to build the commercial complex at the site did not find favour with the city fathers.
The council also discussed the issue of rehabilitation of the displaced gaddas on the municipal land acquired at the old market. Councillors, however, told the chairperson to take the gadda owners into confidence before accepting the GSUDA rehabilitation proposal.
Meanwhile, the civic body has decided to name the old market circle after former Margao MLA Babu Naik. The council has further decided to name the Gogol road junction after Floriano Vaz, who had fallen victim to police bullets during the Konkani agitation.
During the discussion, Councillor Tito Cardozo made a plea to the councillors to consider installing the statue of Dr Jack de Sequeira at a prominent place in South Goa.
