PANJIM: While mining dependents will continue their dharna in the coming week, they have decided not to hold the dharna at Azad Maidan on June 17 and hold protests outside the venue on June 18 allowing the State government to hold the Revolution Day function without hassles.
“We will not hold dharna on June 17 and our protest will shift from Azad Maidan to near a footpath at ferry point on June 18 it being the Revolution Day. We don’t want to disturb the State government’s function. If invited we will be happy to participate in it,” said a member.
Over hundreds of people, under the banner of ‘Mining Dependent People’s Front’, began a peaceful dharna at Azad Maidan last Tuesday. The sit-in protest is being held in Panjim, Bicholim, Dharbandora, Sanquelim and Savordem. It is a chain protest, which will continue till the government has a solution to resume mining activities.
The protestors have demanded that the Union government promulgate an ordinance giving life to leases till 2037 thereby commencing operations, which will help in protecting the livelihood of nearly two lakh people.
