MARGAO: An awareness program on vector-borne diseases was held in Cavelossim village on Saturday in view of the dengue scare in Mobor, even as the Directorate of Health Services said it will dispatch another batch of tests of the same patients and a few others to confirm whether they were affected by dengue or some other illness.
The awareness program was attended by the village sarpanch Viola Costa, Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva, Parish Priest Fr Nelson Colaco and members of Church organizations, a large number of villagers and Chinchinim Primary Health Officer, Dr Nixon Fernandes.
The villagers asked several questions to Dr Nixon, seeking to know the preventive steps initiated by the Health Services. Dr Nixon underlined the need to keep the surroundings clean, adding that the health authorities are still keeping an open mind because of the clinical features of the patients undergoing treatment.
Parish Priest Fr Nelson Colaco said the villagers had panicked after the death of a woman due to fever, adding that the Church bodies have taken the initiative to hold the awareness program for the benefit of the villagers. “This program is being held because of the panic as people wanted to leave the area,” he added.
The issue of sewage and waste water disposal also came up for discussion during the meeting.
Dr Nixon cautioned the villagers that discharge of sewage will contaminate the underground water, posing health hazard to the residents.
