MMC defers meeting on exhibition sales; market vendors annoyed

MARGAO: The deferred Margao Municipal Council (MMC) meeting has irked market traders as they were hoping to oppose MMC’s decision to seek an approval for allowing exhibitions-cum-sales in Margao.

After MMC had listed the proposal of a sports club asking for permissions to hold an exhibition every month, the vendors stopped all work at the MMC building and demanded that no permission be given for such exhibitions as it went against their business. They also said MMC was answerable to them as the vendors operated in municipal markets. At this agitation, MMC assured to discuss the matter at the August 7 meeting, which was postponed due to lack of quorum.
MMC’s Arthur D’Silva stated that the proposal had come to them, and thus, the matter would be placed before the council for a decision.
The 14 councillors who were absent for the August 7 meeting participated in a municipal football tournament the next day. Margao’s Civic Society criticized them for their misplaced priorities as the exhibition matter was just one of 44 topics to be discussed.
