PANJIM: Frustrated over the State government’s negligence towards cleaning the Caranzalem beach, ramponkars fromCaranzalem on Tuesday raised concerns on the deteriorating state of the serene beach.
They claimed that every year they clean the beach by themselves without any government’s help and the contractor, who was supposed to clean the entire beach, fails to do his job properly.
The fisher folks demanded the government to give them the contract of cleaning the beach as they have been doing it for years.
Menino D’Souza, a fisherman from Caranzalem said that they were facing difficulty and cannot go out for fishing with their fishing nets (rampon) due to waste mostly plastic in the sea. “We are spending our money to keep the beach clean every year so that we can catch the fish for our livelihood. Two contractors appointed by the Department of Tourism cannot remove waste washed ashore on the beach. Give the beach cleaning contract to us and we will keep it clean,” he said.
Another fisherman Manuel Gomes said. “We cannot keep out fishing nets (rampon). This is not our work but it is of the government. It will take a minimum of five days for us to remove the waste generated on the beach. Give the beach cleaning contract to us and we assure the government that we will keep it clean and maintain it from Miramar to Aivao, Dona Paula every year.”
