PANJIM: Lawyer-activist Aires Rodrigues has filed a complaint with Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) over the chaos and lack of infrastructure at Cujira integrated educational complex, located on the outskirts of Panjim.
Rodrigues pointed out to flagrant violation of human rights of the students and their parents and alleged that many city-based schools were shifted to Cujira in a very haphazard manner without proper planning.
“It was very distressing that some of the schools have been compelled to shift in incomplete buildings without even the proper infrastructure in place while the authorities have allowed occupancy in unfinished buildings. The ongoing works in some of the buildings is posing a health risk to the students studying in it, and extremely appalling that some schools even lack the required furniture, with three students packed on a bench meant for two,” he alleged in the petition filed on Tuesday.
The complaint comes on the day Herald published a news report highlighting problems like traffic woes faced by parents and students on the first day of the 2017-18 academic year on Monday. Parents had to go through various hardships due to traffic chaos, lack of parking space and roads while dropping their children to school.
Drawing the attention of the GHRC that the move to shift the schools to Cujira was initiated in 2000, Rodrigues stated that it was horrendous that despite 17 years the authorities have not been able to plan even the basic traffic management including access roads. He sought the presence of an emergency ambulance and first aid facilities at the Cujira complex.
