PANJIM: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday claimed that the October 25 municipal elections will further establish the good governance of its party’s leadership in the State, and that they are confident of clinching a majority of the seats through their panels.
Addressing the media, BJP president Vinay Tendulkar said that the like the Zilla Panchayat election, the municipal elections will also prove that only BJP can govern the State and the local bodies. “In the last municipality elections we had only three councils, but this time we will have a majority,” he said.
Trying to settle the unrest created over the reservation of municipal seats, Tendulkar said the BJP government has ensured that all sections got reservations in the municipal election. “For the first time in municipal elections, all sections – scheduled tribe, scheduled caste, other backward classes and women – have managed to get reservations,” he said.
“SC have got reservations for the first time,” he said, adding the “government is committed to give justice to all sections”.
Referring to the charges made by NCP that reservations were done to favour BJP, the party challenged NCP to win at least one ward in any one of the 11 municipal councils.
Following ward reservations, the government is facing a backlash from the opponents and sections of society over reduction in ST reservation, which came down by almost six seats compared to the last elections.
