MARGAO: Retail vendors at the SGPDA market in Fatorda may soon see their long-standing sewage issues resolved, with confirmation that the market will be connected to the government’s sewerage network.

Vendors at the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) market have been under pressure after they received show-cause notices from the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) for lacking a connection to the Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP). However, the vendors clarified that no sewerage line was available for them to connect to, prompting them to apply for a connection.
The matter was also escalated to the High Court, where the SGPDA informed the court of its request to the Public Works Department (PWD) to establish a sewerage line from the market to the main sewerage line, to serve the chicken, mutton, beef, and fish vendors.
On Friday, Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira announced that cost estimates for the sewerage connection had been prepared and that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who chairs the Sewerage Corporation, is expected to approve the file soon. Once cleared, the project will commence, bringing an end to the market’s sewerage woes.
Recently, vendors met with Sequeira, GSPCB, SGPDA, and district administration officials at the District Collectorate in a joint effort to address the issue.
