MARGAO: Several Muslims, under the banner of Sunni Sahara Trust, held a demonstration opposite the Collectorate of South Goa objecting to the changes in Sharia Law (Triple Talak) divorce law. Naming it ‘Sharia Bachao Andolan’ the Muslims said that the law cannot be changed as the religion exists. The demonstration was held to tell the government that they are against the changes and also to ascertain that they are satisfied with the existing Islamic law.
The president of the Sunni Sahara Trust Margao Goa, Ilyas Dhalayat, said, “It’s an omnipotent law in itself and a sacred law which has been and is still being followed worldwide peacefully by both the sects. Hence the question of any interference by the government body in a democratic country shouldn’t arise. Our constitution itself protects and allows a person to freely follow his/her religion.”
The Muslims also said that such interference would affect the religious sentiments of many people and may disrupt the public harmony.
“Their debate has come through a questionnaire circulated by the Law commission where it posed the question of whether triple talaq should be abolished or modified, along with a score of other questions predominantly in the context of framing a uniform civil code (UCC),” alleged Ilyas.
