US ambassador-designate Sergio Gor meets S Jaishankar to discuss India-US strategic partnership and trade, marking efforts to ease bilateral tensions.

US ambassador-designate Sergio Gor met external affairs minister S Jaishankar on Saturday in New Delhi, holding discussions on India-US relations amid ongoing strains over trade and tariff policies introduced during the Trump administration.

Gor, a senior member of President Donald Trump’s inner circle, is visiting India with deputy secretary for management and resources Michael J Rigas for a six-day trip to meet top Indian officials. Alongside Jaishankar, he held talks with foreign secretary Vikram Misri, focusing on bilateral strategic partnership and shared priorities.

Though Gor is set to formally take over as ambassador in January, the visit is seen as an effort by the US administration to stabilise ties. While trade disagreements persist, Prime Minister Narendra Modi noted progress in trade negotiations following his recent phone call with Trump.

There was no official statement from either side regarding the meetings. Jaishankar tweeted that he was pleased to meet Gor, highlighting discussions on the India-US relationship and its global importance. Misri and Gor also exchanged views on the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, according to external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

The US embassy said Gor is engaging Indian counterparts to explore opportunities to deepen strategic ties and promote a stronger, safer, and more prosperous relationship. Trade talks are crucial, especially with a potential Modi-Trump meeting on the sidelines of the upcoming Asean Summit in Malaysia.

The visit, ahead of Gor formally assuming the ambassadorial role in January, aims to restore bilateral relations. Modi recently acknowledged progress in trade talks following discussions with President Trump, despite ongoing differences.

Jaishankar expressed his pleasure at the meeting on social media, noting discussions on the global significance of the India-US relationship. Misri and Gor’s talks were described as “productive exchanges” on strategic cooperation, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

The US embassy added that Gor’s meetings are intended to explore ways to deepen the partnership and foster a safer, stronger, and more prosperous bilateral relationship. Trade-related discussions remain key, particularly ahead of a possible Modi-Trump interaction at the Asean Summit.
