In a landmark moment for Goa’s cultural and academic landscape, the Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) will release its first-ever research journal on tiatr, titled Tiatr-Machi, on October 24. The publication will be officially unveiled by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, in the presence of Art and Culture Minister Ramesh Tawadkar.
The journal marks a major milestone in the history of tiatr, the 133-year-old Goan theatrical form known for its deep social relevance, satire, and storytelling. Despite its enduring popularity, tiatr has long lacked formal academic engagement. Tiatr-Machi aims to bridge this gap by offering research-based insights, critical analyses, and documentation of its literary, historical, and performative dimensions.

Edited by noted writer Marcos Gonsalves with Fausto V. Da Costa and Fr. Luis Gomes as sub-editors, the journal brings together contributions from prominent scholars including Prof. Remy Dias, Dr. Hanumant Chopdekar, Prof. Joao Costa, Dr. Andre Rafael Fernandes, and others.
TAG President Anthony Barbosa described the release as “a turning point” for the tiatr community, adding that the initiative ensures the art form receives the academic recognition it deserves. “This journal celebrates tiatr as an integral part of Goan identity and opens new avenues for research and appreciation,” he said.
The launch event will also feature the release of four new tiatr-related books authored by Willy Silveira, William Fernandes, Natty Fernandes, and Menino de Bandar. The moment is expected to resonate deeply with Goa’s theatre artists, scholars, and audiences, reaffirming tiatr’s vibrant legacy in a scholarly light.
