Rajya Sabha MP Shri Sadanand Shet Tanavade on Thursday raised an urgent call in Parliament for immediate improvements to the Goa–Belagavi National Highways, particularly the stretches passing through Anmod Ghat and Chorla Ghat. He stressed that these routes serve as lifelines for both Goa and Karnataka, carrying thousands of passengers, agricultural produce and essential goods every day.
Highlighting the deteriorating condition of the roads, Shri Tanavade noted that several sections remain narrow, landslide-prone and frequently blocked during the monsoon. He recalled that during recent heavy rains, parts of Anmod Ghat collapsed, resulting in prolonged closures that left commuters stranded for hours — and in some cases, days. With the terrain comprising dense forest and steep hillsides, no viable alternate route exists, causing severe inconvenience and major economic losses.

Shri Tanavade emphasised that Goa maintains strong medical, educational, commercial and familial links with Belagavi. A large number of people travel between the two regions regularly for treatment, studies, shopping and business. He added that nearly 80% of Goa’s vegetables and fruits enter the state via these very highways.
With the New Year round the corner, he warned that any disruption in these corridors would heavily impact the supply of essentials and create hardship for thousands of families, traders and transporters.
Urging the Central Government to act swiftly, Shri Tanavade called for urgent repairs and strengthening of both highways, especially the ghat sections. He also pressed for better monitoring systems, early warning mechanisms and robust rescue arrangements to prevent extended closures during landslides or accidents.
He concluded by appealing for the speedy completion of ongoing works to ensure that this critical Goa–Belagavi link remains safe, motorable and dependable throughout the year.
