Triggered by the deadly fire at the Birch nightclub in North Goa that resulted in 25 fatal ities, the South Goa dis trict administration has launched an intensified inspection drive targeting resorts and nightclubs to assess adherence to safety norms. Officials confirmed that inspections have al ready been completed at 20 establishments across the district. Government-appointed enforcement and moni toring teams have been deployed to examine pub lic venues for compliance with fire safety provisions, licensing requirements and other statutory con ditions. The inspections form part of a compre hensive statewide safety review aimed at strength ening oversight and pre venting future fire-related disasters. South Goa Collector Egna Cleetus, IAS, said that preliminary inspection re ports have flagged multi ple shortcomings. Acting on these findings, the ad ministration has sealed The Cape Goa resort at Cabo de Rama in Canacona after detecting serious vi olations of safety and reg ulatory standards. She cautioned that es tablishments failing to meet prescribed norms would face firm action, particularly where public safety is at risk. Detailing the inspec tion process, Cleetus said teams are closely evaluat ing critical safety elements such as firefighting equip ment, clearly marked emergency exits, crowd control arrangements and the validity of operational licences and permissions. She added that while mi nor deficiencies may be al lowed a short window for correction, any lapse re lated to safety or technical compliance would invite strict measures. “There may be some flexibility for minor is sues, but safety cannot be compromised under any circumstances,” the Col lector said, stressing that protecting lives remains the administration’s fore most concern. In a related develop ment, Deputy Collector (Revenue) Rohan Loli yenkar has called upon the Goa Coastal Zone Manage ment Authority and the Goa State Pollution Con trol Board to carry out an immediate site inspection of the sealed resort. He has also sought fol low-up action from the concerned departments based on their observa tions, highlighting a co ordinated enforcement strategy involving multi ple agencies. Officials said the inspec tion drive is ongoing and will be expanded to cover additional resorts, night clubs and similar estab lishments in the coming days. The district adminis tration has urged owners and operators to ensure full compliance with safety norms on their own initia tive, rather than respond ing only after inspections are conducted. The Birch nightclub fire has brought renewed focus on safety prepar edness and regulatory enforcement at entertain ment venues, especial ly those attracting large gatherings. Authorities be lieve the current drive will not only help identify vio lations but also reinforce accountability across the sector. Reiterating its position, the district administration said adherence to safety regulations goes beyond statutory compliance and represents a shared re sponsibility towards pro tecting both tourists and local residents.
