Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday virtually witnessed the successful breakthrough of a 1.5-kilometre mountain tunnel in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, marking another key milestone in the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project. The ceremony was viewed remotely by the minister from Rail Bhawan in New Delhi.
According to a statement from the Railway Ministry, the tunnel — one of the longest in Palghar — lies between the upcoming Virar and Boisar bullet train stations. This development marks the second tunnel breakthrough for the project in Maharashtra, following the completion of a 5-kilometre underground tunnel between Thane and the Bandra Kurla Complex in September 2025.

The 508-kilometre Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor, India’s first bullet train project, will connect Maharashtra, Gujarat and Dadra & Nagar Haveli. Designed for speeds of up to 320 kmph, the service is expected to cover the distance in just 2 hours and 17 minutes.
The mega infrastructure project is progressing with both technical expertise and financial support from the Government of Japan.
