The Supreme Court will pronounce its verdict on January 5 on the bail pleas of activist Umar Khalid, scholar Sharjeel Imam and five others accused under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots.
A bench comprising Justices Aravind Kumar and N V Anjaria will deliver the judgment on petitions challenging a September 2 Delhi High Court order that denied bail to the accused, citing their alleged role in a “larger conspiracy” behind the violence.

The apex court had reserved its verdict on December 10 after hearing detailed submissions from both sides. While Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and Additional Solicitor General S V Raju represented the Delhi Police, senior advocates including Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Singhvi appeared for the accused.
The Delhi Police have opposed bail, describing the riots as a planned operation aimed at destabilising the country. The violence in February 2020 left 53 people dead and over 700 injured.
