Amit Palekar has urged the government to take strong and effective action to tackle Goa’s growing waste crisis, stating that garbage continues to pile up across the state despite repeated collection drives and clear directions from the judiciary.
Referring to an order of the High Court of Bombay at Goa, which has directed all authorities to clear garbage black spots in their respective jurisdictions, Palekar said the situation on the ground remains grim, with waste still visible along highways, service roads and other public spaces.
He pointed out that the volume of garbage has increased significantly in recent years, largely due to the excessive use of plastic and inadequate waste segregation and disposal systems.
Palekar said the government must adopt a comprehensive and time-bound strategy to address the issue, including strict enforcement against littering, improved waste management infrastructure, and greater public awareness.
“The waste problem cannot be solved through sporadic drives alone. The government needs to take strong and sustained steps to resolve this crisis and ensure a clean and healthy environment for the people of Goa,” he said.
He also called for accountability of local bodies and departments responsible for waste management, stressing that consistent monitoring and enforcement are essential to achieve lasting results.
