Tensions flared at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Thursday after a protest march organised by the students’ union turned violent, leaving both police personnel and students injured.
According to police officials, the confrontation broke out at the main gate of the university when students attempted to take their rally beyond the campus premises. The protestors had announced a “Long March” from the JNU campus to the Ministry of Education office, authorities said in an official statement.

Police alleged that some demonstrators resorted to violence, claiming that sticks and shoes were hurled at officers and that physical assaults took place during the clash. Several police personnel sustained injuries, with officials stating that a few officers were even bitten in the scuffle.
On the other hand, students accused the police of using excessive force to disperse the gathering. Many protestors were detained following the incident.
Among those detained were JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) president Aditi Mishra and former president Nitish Kumar, along with several other students, sources said.
The situation was later brought under control, and further investigation into the incident is underway.
