Tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan escalated sharply on Thursday as Afghan forces launched coordinated attacks along the border, claiming to have killed and captured dozens of Pakistani soldiers in retaliation for recent air strikes.
The cross-border offensive targeted multiple Pakistani military bases and installations, marking a significant escalation in hostilities between the two neighbouring nations. The Taliban-led government in Afghanistan said the action was taken in response to what it described as repeated violations by the Pakistani military.

“In response to repeated violations by the Pakistani military, large-scale offensive operations were launched against Pakistani military bases and military installations,” Taliban government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement.
The governor’s office and local residents in Afghanistan’s Kunar province confirmed that military operations were underway. Afghan officials added that armed forces were active across several other provinces as part of the broader offensive.
The latest flare-up follows months of intermittent border clashes and Pakistani air strikes targeting locations inside Afghanistan.
Pakistan, reacting to the attacks, said the offensive was being met with an “immediate and effective response,” signalling the possibility of further escalation along the volatile frontier.
The situation remains tense as both sides continue military operations.
