Bombay High Court Issues Notice to Zenito Cardozo in State’s Plea to Cancel Bail in Rama Kankonkar Assault Case

The Bombay High Court has issued a notice to Zenito Cardozo in response to an appeal filed by the state government challenging his release on bail in the attempt to murder case involving activist Rama Kankonkar.

Cardozo (36) was arrested on September 22 following a daylight assault at Caranzalem. He was booked under multiple sections of law for allegedly attacking Kankonkar, subjecting him to caste-based abuse, and smearing cow dung on his face during the incident.

Earlier in October, a special court had rejected Cardozo’s bail application, citing concerns over the safety of the victim. However, after the filing of the chargesheet in December, the court granted him conditional bail.

The state has now approached the High Court seeking cancellation of the bail granted to Cardozo. Further proceedings in the matter are awaited.
