In a development that has grabbed both the film and political headlines, Sangeetha Sornalingam, wife of actor‑turned‑politician Vijay, has filed a divorce petition in the Chengalpattu family court, citing allegations of adultery and mental cruelty.
According to the petition filed under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, Sangeetha claims that she discovered in April 2021 that Vijay was involved in an extramarital relationship with an actress. She alleges that the relationship continued despite assurances and that Vijay’s public appearances with the actress, including overseas trips, caused her emotional distress and embarrassment for their children. The petition also mentions constructive desertion and verbal disdain.
Sangeetha, who initially became a fan of Vijay before marrying him, hails from a Tamil industrialist family originally from Sri Lanka. The couple tied the knot in August 1999 and have two children, Jason Sanjay and Divya Saasha, both of whom have appeared alongside Vijay in films.
The divorce filing coincides with Vijay’s political endeavors as the founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), a party preparing for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Legal experts note that the case will be heard in family court, with the possibility of in-camera proceedings to protect the privacy of the children.
While the allegations are serious, they remain claims at this stage, and Vijay has not publicly commented in detail. The next court hearing is expected in April 2026. This case has attracted widespread media attention given Vijay’s dual stature as a film star and political leader.
