The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal has awarded compensation of ₹2.5 lakh to Ganesh Velip (39), a resident of Quepem, for injuries sustained in a road accident in 2018.
According to case details, Velip was riding a motorcycle when a car, attempting to overtake a scooter, collided head-on with his vehicle. The force of the impact threw both Velip and his pillion rider off the bike, resulting in serious injuries. Velip suffered a fracture to his right leg and later underwent surgery, during which a rod and screws were implanted.
The compensation claim was filed against the car driver, the vehicle owner, and the insurance company. While the insurer contested its liability, the tribunal noted that the vehicle was covered under a valid insurance policy at the time of the accident.
Holding both the vehicle owner and the insurer accountable, the tribunal directed them to jointly pay the compensation amount. The award will also carry an annual interest rate of 6 per cent until full payment is made.
