PANJIM: Heavy rains accompanied by thunder, lightning and strong winds lashed the Chorla Ghat region on Wednesday evening, leading to the collapse of a huge tree on the road and bringing vehicular traffic to a complete standstill for some time.
The storm’s impact was so intense that the uprooted tree fell across the roadway, blocking vehicle movement from both sides of the ghat section. Fortunately, no casualties were reported and no vehicle was trapped under the fallen tree. However, several motorists remained stranded on the road, waiting for the authorities concerned to arrive, clear the obstruction and restore traffic movement.
The incident reportedly occurred around 5 pm, after which information about the tree fall was immediately conveyed to the Goa check-post authorities at Keri-Sattari.
Meanwhile, several parts of North Goa also experienced heavy rainfall and gusty weather conditions. Areas including Sankhali, Bicholim and Mayem witnessed intense showers accompanied by thunder and lightning. Aldona received light rainfall, though continuous thunder and lightning throughout the evening indicated changing weather conditions and the possibility of more rain later that night.
The sudden spell of rain also brought down temperatures across the region. Commuters travelling through the ghat section were urged to remain cautious due to slippery roads and the possibility of further tree fall incidents during adverse weather conditions.
