Fresh environmental concerns have emerged in Penha de Franca after locals raised objections over activities taking place along a mangrove stretch between Britona Deck and Ekodi Manas at Coelho Waddo. The issue surfaced soon after reports of large-scale mangrove loss along the Panaji-Bambolim highway in Santa Cruz triggered public discussion over the protection of Goa’s fragile coastal ecosystem.
Residents Krishna R. Pandit and Yadnesh S. Sanzgiry have approached the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA), alleging that a proposed protection wall project is being executed on misleading claims. According to the complaint submitted to the authority, the actual intention behind the project is not protection work but beautification through reclamation of marshy land.

The complainants fear that such activity could severely affect the mangrove vegetation in the area and disturb the ecological balance of the coastal belt. Mangroves are considered crucial for preventing soil erosion, supporting marine biodiversity, and protecting shorelines from tidal impact.
Following the complaint, the GCZMA has decided to conduct a site inspection on May 20 to verify the allegations and examine the work currently underway. The inspection is expected to determine whether any violations have occurred and if the project poses a threat to the sensitive mangrove ecosystem in Penha de Franca.
