Former Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) Secretary Samant Goel on Thursday expressed concern over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to reduce the size of his security convoy as part of the Centre’s fuel-saving measures amid the ongoing Middle East crisis and rising global energy prices.
The Prime Minister recently directed the Special Protection Group (SPG) to cut down the convoy size by nearly 50 per cent. The move comes days after Modi urged citizens to adopt austerity measures such as reducing fuel consumption, carpooling, using public transport and limiting unnecessary expenses. Several BJP chief ministers and senior leaders have also begun following similar practices.

However, Goel argued that the current security environment remains highly volatile and that the Prime Minister’s protection should instead be strengthened.
“Security Is Not A Status Symbol,” Says Goel
Speaking on the issue, Goel pointed to recent international incidents, including attacks targeting US President Donald Trump, to underline growing security threats faced by global leaders.
He said India continues to face threats from terror groups, hostile neighbouring elements, international gangs and jihadi organisations. According to him, newer threats involving drones and sniper weapons make it necessary to constantly upgrade the Prime Minister’s security arrangements.
Goel also stressed that security cover is based on threat assessment and should never be viewed as a status symbol. He warned that reducing the number of vehicles in the convoy could make it easier for hostile elements to identify and target the Prime Minister’s car.
Despite concerns raised by former security officials, government sources have maintained that the convoy reduction has been implemented without compromising the Prime Minister’s safety.
